Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn in Massachusetts. The parents of her were Lithuanian Jewish Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. After her father died as a Carnival barker when Ruth was just a little girl, she had to help support the family working both as a cook and server. Ruth attended the school in Boston's poorest tenement area. She only attended the school for two years, before taking a break to pursue her acting career. The route she took was not without obstacles. When she was in New York, her first job involved posing stills for crime magazines. acting work she wanted eluded. The following job she got was a "hat check" lady at a club until she decided to quit and moved back to Boston. In Boston, where she worked during the night as an actor with New England Repertory Company and the rest of the time she was an usherette. She took classes in drama at the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
